Fake social media profiles are accounts created using someone else's name, photos, and personal information without their consent. These profiles are used for impersonation, cyber stalking, defamation, fraud, and spreading misinformation.

How to Identify a Fake Profile

Check for signs of fake profiles including limited number of friends or followers, no mutual connections, recently created account, profile pictures that look like stock images, inconsistent or sparse information, and content that doesn't match the claimed identity.

Use reverse image search (Google Images or TinEye) to check if profile pictures are stolen from other sources. Look for grammatical errors in posts and unusual behavior patterns. Fake profiles often send unsolicited friend requests or messages.

If the profile is impersonating you or someone you know, check with the person directly. Often, the first indication of a fake profile is when friends ask if you've created a new account or send you screenshots of suspicious activity.

Procedure for Reporting to Social Media Platforms

Facebook: Go to the fake profile, click on the three dots (...) below the cover photo, select 'Find Support or Report Profile', choose the reason (pretending to be someone else), and follow the prompts. Facebook typically reviews and removes fake profiles within 24-48 hours.

Instagram: Go to the fake profile, click the three dots (...) on the top right, select 'Report', choose 'It's pretending to be someone else', and select 'This Account is pretending to be [person]'. Provide the required information.

Twitter/X: Visit the fake profile, click the three dots (...) icon, select 'Report', choose 'They're pretending to be me or someone I know', and complete the report. LinkedIn: Go to the profile, click 'More' button, select 'Report/Block', choose the reason, and submit.

Legal Options and Police Complaint

If the fake profile is used for criminal purposes such as defamation, extortion, or fraud, file a complaint with the local police or cyber cell. You can file an FIR under Section 66C (identity theft) and Section 66D (cheating by personation) of the IT Act.

File a complaint on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal at cybercrime.gov.in. Provide screenshots of the fake profile, URLs, evidence of impersonation, and any communication from the fake account.

For public figures and celebrities, the cyber cell often takes expedited action.
